Did you know that the first medical X-ray was invented in 1895 by a German physicist? This technology hasn’t changed much in over a century, yet most modern physicians and chiropractors still rely on them to screen or and diagnose many conditions. The first test for cholesterol was conducted in 1948, and this technology continued to evolve throughout the 1950’s. Testing thyroid stimulating hormone (a hormone made by the pituitary gland) to diagnose thyroid conditions began in the 1960’s. Finally, home blood glucose meters became available in the 1970’s. Why are these old diagnostic methods still being used by most doctors even though much better technologies are available for the diagnosis of the underlying cause of patients’ symptoms?
Today, it’s even possible to test your genome for SNPs (single nucleotide polymorphisms) that could predispose you to certain chronic diseases. Knowing which SNPs you have provides valuable information because this allows you to implement a nutritional and lifestyle strategy to “turn off” harmful undesirable genetic variations and “turn on” the good ones. If you were to become ill, would you respond well or poorly to particular medications? Knowing this information could be lifesaving in an emergency situation.
I’m excited to be able to provide this kind of advanced testing for Functional Medicine patients like you. When you receive your genome test kit, all you have to do is swab the inside of your cheek and mail the sample to the lab. No blood draw and no spitting in tubes! After your genome is analyzed using some of the most advanced technology available, you will receive a very detailed report of findings (see this example report). The information is so empowering!
